‘Yellowstone’ Just Killed Off Another Major Character
In what has become a tireless storytelling motif, Yellowstone continues to kill off several main characters ahead of the series finale on December 15, 2024. The trend began with John Dutton’s shocking bathroom death in the Season 5, Part 2 premiere, giving way to Kevin Costner’s departure. In the three subsequent episodes, more deaths have plagued the Dutton family and their extended orbit, leaving fans wondering who, if anyone, will come out alive in the final two episodes.
While it appears the recent Yellowstone deaths will dovetail into Taylor Sheridan’s latest series spin-off, The Madison, the recurring cycle of death, murder, and mayhem underscores the dangers of frontier living on a reservation. Regardless of how the final Yellowstone episodes set up The Madison, there’s nothing easy or predictable about saying goodbye to the most beloved characters in such a morbid fashion. With respect for the dead, eulogizing Yellowstone‘s most recently deceased is in order.
‘Yellowstone’s’ Most Recent Death, Explained
Following the episode, Richards posted a touching farewell to his character on Instagram. The post featured the caption “Grateful” and an image of a chair with Colby’s clothing folded beside his trusty cowboy hat and cowboy boots. After all that Colby gave to the Duttons in exchange for their trust, saying goodbye to the fan-favorite Bunkhouse Boy is almost as hard as bidding farewell to John Dutton.
Richards added more to his Instagram Stories, including fan account responses to his co-stars Kelly Reilly (Beth Dutton) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Richards also posted a tender tribute to Colby from Jennifer Landon, who plays Teeter in Yellowstone. Following the episode “Counting Coup,” director Christina Voros told The Hollywood Reporter:
“The thing that I think is such a gut-punch about Colby’s death is that in a season where there are all these twists and turns and dark forces and giant narrative swings, Colby’s death is so powerful because it’s so simple,” said Voros. “For anyone who really understands the lifestyle of cowboys and working with animals and the risks of the jobs — and Rip says it about himself — it’s a dangerous job, and this kind of thing happens and it happens in a split-second.”
Who Else Has Been Killed in ‘Yellowstone’ Season 5B?
Following John Dutton’s death in Season 5, Episode 9, “Desire Is All You Need,” the next two episodes uncover who orchestrated it. In Episode 11, “Three Fifty-Three,” fans learn that savvy lawyer and corporate raider Sarah Atwood (Dawn Oliveri) was the one who arranged John Dutton’s death. Later in the episode, Sarah is fatally gunned down in a drive-by shooting by unknown assailants in a van.
While it’s unclear why Sarah was killed and who was responsible, the writing on the wall is stark. The stakes in Yellowstone‘s final episodes have reached life-and-death consequences that cannot end well for the remaining survivors. Kaycee Dutton (Luke Grimes) has a dark look of vengeance in his eyes, while Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) remains as unscrupulous and unpredictable as any other family member.
Whatever transpires in the final two Yellowstone episodes, the creators are clearing the path for the next TV spin-offs by killing roughly one character per episode since Season 5B returned.
